Plot

A subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they’ll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out.

Handsomely produced and never less than hugely entertaining, Ascher's film is catnip for Kubrickians and critics both professional and otherwise. ...

Nutty, arcane and jaw-dropping in equal measure, this is a head-first plunge down the rabbit hole of Kubrickiana from which, for some, there is evidently no return. ...read more

The documentary Room 237 is an ostensibly thoughtful deep reading, a deconstruction of Stanley Kubrick’s film of Stephen King’s 1980 novel “The Shining.” What it really is, is a bunch of obsessives obsessing about an obsessive movie maker’s obsessive movie. ...read more

Room 237 becomes not a film about "The Shining" or even a film about film. Rather, it is an examination of the nature of obsession, about how we are capable of convincing ourselves — and possibly others — that just about anything might be true. ...read more

Whether you agree with all the interpretations shared in this film or not, you will definitely be exposed to some of the undeniable anomalies deliberately but subtly embedded into the film by Kubrik. One example is the revelation that Jack Nicholson’s character is in fact reading a copy of Playgirl Magazine in public when he is approached by the hotel manager. There are several other intriguing examples that show that Kubrik was definitely alluding to hidden meanings in this film. Again, you may or may not agree with the interpretations of these meaning shared in this film, but you will likely enjoy discovering, as I did, that these deliberate anomalies do in fact exist.

I’ve never made a comment on this site but this is quite possibly THE most insane thing I have seen and heard. It’s basically 8-9 people that we have no clue who they are making comments on how they interpret the shining. Insane people that took mistakes in the filming of the movie, chairs being left out of scenes, posters on the walls, piles of luggage?? At one point a woman speaking talks about a skiing poster on the wall and as they zoom into it she states how its actually a minatour half man half horse and as they zoom in it gets clearer that it is a MAN skiing and she is talking as it really is a minatour! And there is no indication at all as they zoom in that it is not a man skiing. The whole time I felt as if the director of this has gathered and found completely insane people to interpret the way they watched this movie. 2 or 3 of them described how it change their lives profoundly! One guy describing it as he could not get out of his seat when it ended!! Watch it, enjoy the crazy and you’ll notice your jaw dropping the longer it goes on. And then you’ll be shaking your head at the end in a WTF motion!

What a load of crap! Who are these idiots that are reading WAY too much into this movie? Why don’t they talk more about how this movie was a lot different than King’s novel? I’m with you, Billyo33.
