Disney, Marvel & Netflix Unite For Multi-Series The Defenders TV Show
Disney, Marvel and Netflix are coming together for one of TV’s most intriguing and ambitious projects. The three media giants have announced plans to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters to the small screen from 2015, with the aim of them all combining in one mega mini-series soon after. In short, imagine a Netflix-exclusive, TV version of Marvel’s ‘Phase 1′ movies (solo adventures followed by a mega team-up) and you’re not far off. Even more exciting is the news of the characters they’ll be highlighting, with each series focused on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron First and Luke Cage respectively. Each thirteen episode series will delve into the gritty world of Marvel’s ‘street-level’ heroes and villains situated in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. The final series will re-imagine the company’s ‘The Defenders’ superhero team, as the four characters come together to unite against a greater evil. While Marvel’s current Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series is coming under critical fire for its lack of superheroics, this could be the project to address the balance. Not only that, but it’s an optimistic flag in the sand to support minority and female superhero characters that have felt so under-represented (Luke Cage is one of Marvel’s most popular black characters, and Jessica Jones starred in her own morally-complex, gripping and adult private eye comic series, Alias).
