Dan Mazer’s I Give it a Year is a romance-comedy about a failed marriage that transitions into an astoundingly funny and amusing comedy.  Partners, Josh (Rafe Spall) and Nat (Rose Byrne) get married under a bad omen due to the priest’s mispronunciation of the phrase “Husband and Wife.”  It’s no wonder that only after nine months of marriage the couple sees a marriage counselor, (Olivia Colman) to try to figure out the roots of their failed marraige, and if they can save their matrimony.  Mazer then rewinds to the problems of their marriage consisting of arguments, resentments and how opposites may attract but also how they repel.

Nat finds interest in her handsome, sophistocated marketing client (Simon Baker) while Josh repairs his feelings for his former girlfriend, Chloe (Anna Faris).  The couple knew they got married too quickly, they don’t match, and they don’t want to turn out bitter like their married friends, Naomi (Minnie Driver) and Hugh (Jason Flemyng).

Overall, Mazer turns a negative marriage into a positive divorce and shows the good and bad of Nat and Josh’s marriage.
